Michigan 2010

August 2010   Toronto to Sault Ste Marie to Port Huron, Michigan and home

Janet was heading to Vancouver and I started out with her on a cloudy but warm  Friday.    We meet up on Steeles and off we went.   Stopped north of Barrie for lunch.
It was then that the clouds started to roll in.    About ½ hour into our north bound route the rain started.    But we clung on and kept going.   Within an hour the sun was out and we were wind drying.    After Sudbury we stopped for gas.   The trip from there to Sault Ste Marie seemed to last forever.   On Hwy 17 After Blind River it was very pretty riding next to the lake.    My speedometer gave up somewhere up here.
We finally got to Sault Ste Marie and quickly found the hotel.   Down to the bar for drinks and dinner.
The next morning started a bit overcast but cleared pretty quickly.   Janet went on North and I had to face the bridge into Michigan.   The customs officer chatted to me about old bikes.   Hwy 75 due south was well maintained and many road stops along the way with vending machines and real washrooms.   The state looks much like Ontario.
At Clair, I stopped for gas and started heading east into Bay City.  At Saginaw I picked up a secondary road that would take me straight into Port Sanilac.   Nice clear road with little traffic.    At some point I got, yet another, bee in my helmet – so I quickly pulled over to pull off the helmet.   A woman driving by stopped to see if I needed help.   I followed the shore of Lake Huron all the way down to Port Huron.   560 kms today.  After a few u turns I ended up at a pretty nice hotel where I got a room for $ 79.00 and free parking.   Tried the swimming pool and then the bar.   Had a really good sleep.
After breakfast I was very quickly at the border and back onto Canadian land.  This stretch to London was pretty uneventful.   But once off the 402 and onto the one lane roads through all the small towns it was beautiful.   Came through Paris and onto the Lakeshore.   Today put 300 kms on me and the bike.   1,600 kms round trip.
